James Avant, owner of OCD Cakes (Obsessive Cake Disorder), won the ArtWorks “Big Pitch” competition on October 7th, in front of a cheering audience of 500. The Big Pitch is a 10-week program sponsored by ArtWorks That is open to creative small business owners who have been in business for at least two years. The entrepreneurs who are selected receive training and mentoring from both a small business mentor and a U.S. Bank banking advisor.
As the 2016 Big Pitch winner, OCD Cakes was awarded $15,000 seed money to help build his business. Avant developed a love for baking to deal with his ongoing journey with anxiety, and started OCD Cakes as not only a creative outlet, but also as a way to give back to the mental health community. Five percent of the profit from every cake sold by OCD Cakes goes to help a local mental health agency.
Mr. Avant is an HCDC Small Business Services coaching client and a founding member of the Findlay Kitchen Incubator. For more information on OCD Cakes, visit http://ocdcak.es/.
